Wedgelocks are a small but critical part of a Deutsch connector. They help keep the terminals properly positioned and secured inside the connector housing. A Deutsch wedgelock, sometimes called a secondary lock, is a plastic locking component that installs into a Deutsch connector housing after the contacts have been inserted. Its job is to make sure the contacts are fully seated, properly aligned, and retained in the connector.
Why Are Wedgelocks Needed?
Deutsch connectors already have internal retention fingers that hold each contact in place. The wedgelock provides an additional layer of mechanical security. Wedgelocks help to:
- Secure the contacts so they don't back out of the housing.
- Maintain proper contact alignment for a reliable connection when the two connector halves are mated.
- Confirm proper assembly because the wedgelock generally cannot seat correctly if a contact isn't inserted to the proper position.
- Increase reliability in demanding environments, particularly where wiring is exposed to vibration, movement, dirt, moisture, or repeated use.
Think of a wedgelock as the connector's backup locking system. The housing grabs the contacts first, and the wedgelock helps make sure everything stays where it belongs.
What Type of Connectors Require A Wedgelock?
Wedgelocks are used during the assembly of many Deutsch connector families, particularly the popular DT, DTM, and DTP series. The basic assembly process looks like:
Strip Wire → Crimp Contact → Insert Contact → Install Wedgelock → Mate Connector
Once all of the contacts have been fully inserted into the connector housing, the appropriate wedgelock is installed. When servicing or modifying the connector later, the wedgelock is typically removed before contacts are extracted.
Why Wedgelocks Matter
In automotive, motorsports, heavy equipment, agricultural, marine, and off-road applications, electrical connections can encounter constant vibration and physical movement. A terminal that backs out even slightly can cause an intermittent or failed electrical connection.
That's why the wedgelock may look like a simple piece of plastic, but it plays an important role in creating the secure, dependable connection Deutsch connectors are known for.
